Criteria for Placement into Grade 6 Honors ELA Classes

To be considered for Honors English Language Arts, rising 6th grade students must meet specific criteria. These are designed to identify very high achieving and highly motivated ELA students in order to give them the opportunity to participate in an Honors ELA class. Students must meet the eligibility criteria each year to remain in Honors ELA classes.

The eligibility process involves a point system with students receiving points in the following three areas:

  • PSSA – English Language Arts Scaled Scores (average of last two years)
  • Final Grade in ELA & Teacher Input
  • District Benchmark

Parents of students, who earn at least 10 points based on the criteria, will be notified of their child’s opportunity to participate in an Honors English 6 class.

1201 – 1151 2 points B+ or B with teacher recommendation 2 points 83-86% 2 points
1150 – 1100 1 point B 1 points 80-82% 1 point

Eligibility = 10 points

To be considered for Honors English Language Arts, rising 7th grade students must meet specific criteria. Parents of students who earn at least 12 points based on the criteria, will be notified of their child’s opportunity to participate in an Honors English 8 class.
