Grade Five Students at Greenwood Read for Miles

A group of 8 students read contentedly in stocking feet at the reading night

On Friday, November 23, grade five students enjoyed Friday Night Live at Greenwood Elementary featuring a 5-hour readathon.  Organized by the fifth grade team (Mr. Boyer, Miss Byerly, Mr. Chestnut, Dr. Kilpatrick, and Miss Rupard), this multi-year tradition of Friday Night Live is an opportunity for students to imagine a trip and read while they "travel".

Prior to the event, all the grade five students worked in groups to research National Parks. Each group was a different "National Park." The goal of the evening was to "travel" from Kennett to the different National Parks and return to Kennett by reading before the night ended. With each page accounting for about a mile, the students traveled a great distance throughout the night!

The students began the evening under a tent with their team, set up in the cafeteria, and read until the timer went off. They then scurried to their next structured activities in different parts of Greenwood until it was time for them to return to their tents and read some more. They had so much fun!

One student exclaimed, "This is the best night of my life!"  They enjoyed pizza and Wendy's ice cream for dinner and dessert while earning many prizes throughout the evening.  Teachers, aides, and parents worked together to create a memorable night of camaraderie and reading that the students in grade five won't soon forget!
