Teachers Welcomed at Opening Event

Marching Band performs for teachers on opening day

Teachers were welcomed in the KHS auditorium on Thursday, August 22 to officially open the 2024 - 2025 school year.  After three days preparing for the first day of school, faculty converged at the high school to hear from administration, board members, and the new superintendent.

Members of the KHS cheer team celebrated the arrival of all guests at the entrance of the school while administrators greeted teachers inside.   Attendees enjoyed breakfast at the cafeteria then headed into the auditorium where a special video presentation featuring new employees played on the screen.

Assistant Superintendent Michael Barber opened the event, sharing how a special employee had inspired him.  Guillermina Ortiz Cordova, head custodian at Mary D. Lang Kindergarten center joined Barber at the podium, clearly moved by the acknowledgement.

"GiGi is an inspiration to us all," said Barber.

"After nine years as a custodian at KMS, GiGi reluctantly agreed to take the head custodial position at MDLKC.  She was nervous she would not be able to fulfill the role.  Many who knew her assured her of our belief in her as a person and professional."

 He continued:

"Day after day GiGi has continued to prove us right!  Her tireless work ethic and pride in our school district, building, and community continue to shine bright.  We are thankful to have her on our team and be an inspiration to us all."

Board of School Directors President David Kronenberg also shared some words with the audience, welcoming them and thanking them for their commitment to the district's students and families.  Board Members Michael Finnegan and Mark Bowden were also in attendance.

New Superintendent Dr. Kimberly Rizzo Saunders, dressed in Kennett colors, shared her excitement and gratitude for becoming a member of the KCSD community.  She is looking forward to meeting all of her new colleagues and growing the district together.

Members of the high school band, in full uniform, performed a few numbers to pump up the crowd while our cheer team celebrated in the isles.  It was a fitting end to a long week of preparation for the first days of the 2024 - 2025 academic year in Kennett Consolidated School District.  Elementary teachers hurried back to their schools to greet families as part of the annual Sneak-A-Peek event at each school.
